Questions and Answers

What will the daily schedule look like for instruction, such as start and end time? I do not work at home, so this is important information for me to have as soon as possible.2020-08-20T18:56:57+00:00
  • We hope to have schedules completed soon to be able to share with you well in advance for planning purposes. Schedules will be consistent each day.
  • I can tell you that now, according to our draft, all students will log on at 9:00 and again at 12:30. Individual teachers will be sharing their weekly schedules with you once school starts also.
Are classes and 1:1 going to be done by a specific time during the day? ie, 1-2pm? Then more by self after?2020-08-20T18:18:16+00:00

Yes. We are doing our best to develop a schedule that will be consistent each day. Students will have synchronous (live) sessions with the teacher, followed by some small group or individual support time and/or independent work time.

Is it going to be 9:15-3:30 like in school?2020-08-20T18:14:33+00:00

Not exactly. According to the current draft of our master schedule, students will log on at 9:00 and again at 12:30 for about an hour each time (at most). They may also have some work to do independently at a time that works best for your family.

How much instruction time will the kids get with their teacher daily?2020-08-20T18:12:35+00:00

Approx. 1-2 hours a day, depending on age. In addition, they may have some small group or one on one time with the teacher or an instructional assistant and some independent work to be completed at a time that works best for your family.

Trying to write / draw using the computer tools. It would have been easier to just have them write things on a piece of paper, take a picture of it, and send it in.2020-08-20T18:06:21+00:00

That would be perfectly acceptable.

My phone is a mobile phone not a smart phone and I use a computer for my internet needs. So I don’t have access to the remind app.2020-08-20T18:05:05+00:00

We do our best to share information in a variety of ways to ensure parents can access it.

  • One of the best places to access information is our school facebook page (@battlecreekelementaryschool) since there are multiple BC staff, including myself, who share information there.
  • We also have an Instagram page (BattleCreekElementary), but are not able to post videos there.
  • Our school website is also another option for all important information. During July, our website is not managed.
  • The district website also has a plethora of information.
  • The message you are referring to on Remind was one sent out by the district, but all of our teachers have access to it as well. You should also be able to access it from your computer as well: www.remind.com

Will there be less screen time? More hands on work? Like workbooks/textbooks?2020-08-20T17:47:02+00:00

There will be more hands on work that will be independent or will require minimal support. I wish I could say there would be less screen time, but unfortunately, in order to deliver the instruction we need for kids to make academic growth, it’s unavoidable.

when returning to classroom later in the year, how will this work? split days? reduced hours?2020-08-20T17:45:15+00:00

As of right now, we’re thinking students will attend T/TH or W/F full days (1/2 class at a time). But as we have learned recently, that can always change depending on the guidance we receive from Oregon Department of Education.

Will my student be going 4 days in person and one day not when we return face to face?2020-08-20T17:22:16+00:00

When we are able to return to blended learning, students will either attend T/TH or W/F so they will attend school 2 days a week and continue distance learning the other 3 days, with Mondays staying the same as they are now.

I’m curious as to what in person school will look like when the time comes? As far as social distancing, masks, sanitation, temp checks. I know my child has a bit of anxiety and I am curious on what will be the best option for her.2020-08-20T17:19:10+00:00
  • When that time comes, we will be following the recommendations of the CDC and the Oregon Department of Education.
  • Most likely, we will have to do our best to have students maintain social distancing, where masks, frequent hand washing or use of sanitizer, sanitizing of school materials and equipment, etc. but we will also do our best to follow a “normal” school schedule.
  • We want it to feel familiar and do as much as we normally would do.

When is learning going to go back to normal everyday to in school learning?2020-08-20T17:15:38+00:00

Not until November 15th at the earliest. We have certain metrics our county must meet before we are permitted to return in person, per the Governor’s orders.

What if there are certain required family projects, etc. on a day where there won’t be a parent with the child? Can there be a way to make these up or have them assigned not to a specific day but maybe a weeks time?2020-08-20T17:08:07+00:00
  • For consistency for families, that will not always be feasible.
  • However, if you communicate with your child’s teacher when that is the case, he/she will be flexible and willing to work something out.
I would like to see a comparison comparison schedule for EDGE and CDL.2020-08-20T17:03:30+00:00

  • EDGE is currently working on a sample schedule, which will be posted on our district website (as well as EDGE’s webpage) soon so please check back next week.
Will there be more LRC help and small groups during CDL?2020-08-20T16:32:23+00:00
  • Our LRC teachers offered “office hours” every day to assist students, but unfortunately we rarely had students attend.
  • This year, we’ll communicate in a few different ways to make sure we get the word out to everyone.
Will there be a supplies list put out before school gets started?2020-08-20T16:30:33+00:00

  • It’s a bit more complicated this year so we’re first trying to determine what ALL will be needed, then what we will purchase as a school.

I work full time and my student will be in daycare while I’m at work. Their daycare provider has no way to accommodate CDL. Is the live instruction going to be recorded so it can be completed later in the day? Will they still get attendance points?2020-08-20T16:18:47+00:00

  • Our preference is that they join the live sessions so they can interact with their teacher, peers, ask questions in real time, etc. However, if students are unable to attend the live sessions, they can be recorded.
  • This is just one way students receive credit for attendance.
  • Attendance also include communication from the student (chat, email), phone call with parents, visible progress on assignments as compared to previous day, and posting or turning in completed assignments.

Are students required to be in live sessions, or will there be a recording they can watch later to qualify for attendance?2020-08-20T16:13:22+00:00

How will lunches be handled this school year if we are CDL and EDGE? Will we be able to pick up at BC or have to go to a different site, like they have been doing in the summer?2020-08-20T16:10:18+00:00

Yes, Grab & Go lunches will still be available each day.

The district is currently working to expand the locations so, fingers crossed, we will have them available at BC (or another closer elementary school).

Our family might be out of town on the week of the 8th, how can I connect with the teacher to get my student set up for the 15th?2020-08-20T16:07:54+00:00
  • Our teachers will be reaching out to each of their students’ families the first two weeks of school.
  • We will be able to make arrangements separately for anyone who is unavailable to pick up supplies the week of the 8th.
  • Please ensure your information on ParentVue is accurate and updated as that is what we will use to make contact with our families.
Will my child still be apart of the Battle Creek community if they are doing EDGE learning?2020-08-20T16:03:53+00:00

Yes, for the most part. Students at EDGE are still connected to their residential school. This is where they would attend clubs, choir, orchestra, band, sports, Grab and Go lunches, etc. However, all instruction would take place through EDGE and the EDGE staff.

I had a home device last year and would like to get a SK Chromebook this year, is that possible?2020-08-19T23:43:30+00:00

For young learners will the online meetings with teachers be done in small groups?2020-08-19T23:41:40+00:00

It will most likely be a combination of both whole group and small group instruction. However, we will maximize the use of our resources and staff to deliver the best instruction possible virtually.

Will there be an opportunity to pick up Chromebooks for those that didn’t get one or are new to the district?2020-08-19T23:25:58+00:00
  • If you student is new to the district, once they are officially registered, they will be given a student ID which will help when picking up a Chromebook
  • You can confirm this through your ParentVue account or call our office at 503-399-2062
  • We are waiting to hear from the district what it will look like this fall when picking up student Chromebooks, we are hoping that they will be available on site at BC when you come and pick-up materials & supplies the week of Sept. 8th.
For young learners an we use worksheets instead of seesaw?2020-08-19T23:19:52+00:00

Unfortunately, we are very limited on our ability to print and have families pick up hard copies. Also we have many families that are unable to print from home. However, you are more than welcome to have your child complete the activity on paper, which is important for developing gross motor skills and then just upload a picture from your phone or another device.
